2012 Program Year

January 3rd, 2012 – Regular Meeting This meeting will feature invited speaker Deryl Empson. Since 1998, Deryl has been the Director of Enforcement – Field Services Branch, Fish and Wildlife Division, at SRD. With recent government re-structuring in the fall, Deryl’s Branch has moved to the Ministry of Solicitor General and Public Security, where he remains the government manager responsible for the enforcement of Alberta’s fishing and hunting regulations across the province. Deryl started his career as a Fish & Wildlife Officer in the early 1970’s and so has had considerable first hand experience in the field, serving in Whitecourt, Evansburg, Calgary, St.Paul, Barrhead and Cochrane before his move to Edmonton. Deryl’s presentation will provide information about the enforcement officers in the field, the types of enforcement approaches and activities they undertake, and recent statistics on the nature and numbers of infractions and enforcement actions taken. Enforcement has long been a topic of continuing interest and discussion by members over the years – so here is your chance to find out more about this important component of maintaining and protecting a sustainable fishery in the province.

Tuesday October 16th Club Meeting – At this informal meeting, members attending had a good opportunity to catch up on happenings over the summer/fall with many of the other “Club Meeting regulars”. Most of the evening was spent with members talking in small groups, catching up on fishing  action and trips (both local lakes and out-of-province trips). Some Club business/activities were discussed, including progress on the dock and the planned Work Party at Spring Lake.

Tuesday, November 20th Club Meeting – This Meeting will feature invited speaker Keith Rae, local outfitter and guide. Keith runs Get Hooked Fishing Adventures (website www.gethookedfishing.com). Keith will be talking about fly fishing on the North Saskatchewan River – and he will discuss a variety of fishing opportunities, with the objective of opening our eyes to the many different species of fish available in our own back yard. Keith grew up in Alberta and has spent his life in the province as an outdoor enthusiast. Keith dreamed about following in the footsteps of his grandfather who was a Gillie on the Tweed River in Scotland. Starting in 1994 on a part-time basis, and then full-time since 2000, Keith is living his dream job as a fishing guide and enjoying the kind of life it allows (his business does more than 100 guided trips on the North  Saskatchewan each year). This should be a great learning opportunity!

Sunday, December 9th – ETFC Christmas Brunch – The Club’s Christmas event will be held at the Executive Royal Inn West (178 St. & Stony Plain Road) – the  same venue as the very successful Brunches of the past several years. This is the Club’s major social event each year and it is a great opportunity to meet and get to know other Club members better, while enjoying a great brunch (more  choices that you could ever consume!). And you have good odds of getting lucky on some of the prize/raffle draws.
