Due to the  weather the Executive has decided to postpone the BBQ until next weekend in hopes for less rain and more attendees.

Annual Spring Lake BBQ – The Club’s annual Spring BBQ event out at Spring Lake. Take your tent or trailer and head out for a relaxing weekend at the Club’s Spring Lake property, or else make a day trip out on Sunday and take in the afternoon BBQ. The Club will provide attendees with Baked Potatoes and Corn-on-the-Cob, along with a hot grill to cook your meat. Bring your own choice of meat, liquid refreshments, plates/cups/utensils, desserts, or other food items. And consider bringing along something to put out on the “contributions” table for sharing – from salads or veggies, to buns or desserts. The grills are usually ready to begin cooking around 2:00pm. This meeting is the Club’s Annual Members Night, where we wrap up the year’s
meeting schedule as we gear up for spring and summer fishing opportunities and turn our focus to getting outdoors and enjoying one of our favourite pastimes. As in past years, this meeting will feature a “pot-luck” buffet with members
bringing contributions for the food and dessert tables, and enjoying some eats and conversation in addition to the meeting presentation. We are presently in conversation with the provincial folks at Fisheries Management, SRD regarding
presentation topics.

This meeting is the Club’s Annual Guest Night – so bring your partner, or other
interested folks, be they family or friends. It will undoubtedly be a very intertaining evening as our featured speaker this year is John Acorn, from the Department of Renewable Resources, Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences at the UofA. You will be familiar with John as host of his acclaimed TV series “Acorn, The Nature Nut”, a family-oriented how-to-be-a-naturalist show, or his travel show for bird watchers “Twits and Pishers”. John has an extensive list of accomplishments and awards, having written 17 books and well-received field guides, being video host for the galleries of the Royal Tyrell Museum, having received two national television Gemini nominations, and having received many professional awards. A native Edmontonian, John currently teaches at the University of Alberta, is actively involved in entomological research, and travels widely as a lecturer. John’s presentation is titled “Sight, Sound, Trout and Bugs”. John’s extensive knowledge and superb presentation talents mean this will be a most entertaining and informative session.

As part of the Club’s conservation agenda and our ongoing interest in promoting
sustainable and high quality trout (and other) fishing opportunities in Alberta, this meeting will focus on a program being considered by the Club to explore the potential for using the Jordan-Scotty Salmonid Egg Incubator within Alberta.
This device is manufactured in BC (in Sidney on Vancouver Island) by the Scott Plastics folks. It helps enable a much higher rate of egg to fry hatching success than through natural spawning rates (typically above 85% versus 5%-20% by
mother nature). Club member Phil Bentley took a trip out to Sidney this past year to talk with the Scott Plastics folks and investigate the device, and he has brought back a sample for a first hand look. We also have a short video about the device and copies of the Users Guide. Invitations to attend this meeting have gone out to various folks (e.g. from ACA, Alberta Fish and Wildlife, AFGA) to join us to learn about the device and discuss the potential for its use within Alberta. This incubator is being used successfully elsewhere in Canada and around the world, and the Club feels it deserves a serious look for possible use here in Alberta.
